Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, a long weekend made for cookouts, family gatherings, time outdoors and maybe one last trip before fall routines take over.
But everyone celebrates a little differently. For some, Labor Day means firing up the grill and gathering the whole family around the table. For others, it’s a weekend at the lake, a hometown festival, a favorite sporting event or simply enjoying an extra day to relax.
We asked the Lifescape team to share their favorite Labor Day traditions. The answers offer a fun glimpse at how our team enjoys this last long weekend of summer.

My favorite Labor Day tradition was always a simple barbecue. My grandmother would make homemade vanilla ice cream and strawberry pie, which made it extra special. Since my grandparents and my father have passed, the tradition has faded, but those Labor Day memories with them are ones I’ll always cherish.

Football. Football. And more football. I have been/am a KCFC, CYO, St Thomas Aquinas High School, Army, KU and Indiana State football mom since 2003. Since 2018 we have juggled Friday Night Lights and Saturday College Gamedays. We have 3 state championships, a bowl win against Mizzou and last September I got a red zone tackle against Indiana for my birthday. This year I will be traveling to watch my son play against Purdue. I am also a big KSU fan and praying for a great season for Coach Klein!

The tradition in my family is all about my children. Each year I keep the grandkids for the weekend so my girls and their husbands can have a long weekend alone before everything gets too crazy with school and activities. I do fun things for the kids, zoo visit, trampoline park, splash pad, and drive-in movie (if there is a kid friendly option) otherwise, movie at home with all the trimmings, popcorn, juice, caramel apples, and homemade pizza and ice cream. Oh, and lots of memory making!!!
Katie Riordan, Director of Operations
We love to get with close friends of ours, cook out and Jacob (my husband) makes the best homemade ice cream. This year we are celebrating with my two girls, my husband and our good friends and their kids out in Branson.
Karen Graham, Benefits Specialist

One of my favorite Labor Day traditions is spending time with family at Stockton Lake, enjoying good food, and making memories together. Whether we’re gathering around the table playing games or boating and floating, it’s the time together that makes it special. Those simple moments are what I treasure most.

Labor Day is always best spent at the lake with my family—out on the boat, soaking up the last days of summer, and working up an appetite. We like to finish the day with plenty of good food, laughter, and time together, which is always my favorite part.
Glen Smith, Attorney
Growing up in the hills and hollers of East Tennessee, my family consisted of hard-working blue-collar folks, toiling day-in and day-out in the factories, fields, and construction sites. When Labor Day came around, it was a community affair – a huge potluck dinner down at the community center – watermelons, corn on the cob, fried chicken and catfish, cornbread, homemade ice cream, cakes, pies, games, swimming in the icy water of the creek, and bluegrass and gospel music. Out under the shelters and tents. The American Flag flying. Loads of stories shared by the elders. It was something right out of the Norman Rockwell pictures. Boy, was that such a blast!
